What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins result from a condition called venous reflux. In healthy veins, blood courses from the limbs back to the heart, pumped along by valves. When these valves become diseased - which can happen for a variety of reasons such as age, weight gain, stress, pregnancy, and heredity - they can no longer move blood along effectively. Instead, the blood slows, pools, or reverses course altogether.
Symptoms of varicose veins include the following:
- Bulging, knotty or ropey veins with a dark red, purple or blue appearance visible at the surface of the skin
- An aching, burning or throbbing sensation in the legs
- Trouble walking even short distances without experiencing fatigue
- "Restless leg syndrome" that causes legs to twitch at night, interfering with sleep
What are spider veins?
Though they seldom have the physically bothersome symptoms of varicose veins, many people chose to get rid of spider veins because of their unattractive appearance. Spider veins look like tiny cobweb or roadmap lines at the surface of the skin, most often on the head, neck, chest, arms or legs.
It's important to realize that varicose veins and spider veins can also be a symptom of more significant circulatory problems. So if you are concerned about problem veins and live in Pittsburgh or a nearby community such as Fox Chapel, Sewickley, Moon Township, Wexford, Mars, Ross Park, Zelienople, Ellwood City, McCandless, Coraopolis, Crafton, Robinson, North Fayette, Leetsdale, Bellvue, Baden, Ambridge, Freedom, New Sewickley, Rochester, Beaver, Brighton Township, New Brighton, Beaver Falls, North Hills, Chippewa, New Castle, Center Township, Hopewell, Aliquippa, or Cranberry Township, contact Advanced Vein Center today to schedule an evaluation.
